In a major announcement by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the streetlights of the newly developed sectors on nine stretches will soon be transformed into a smart network.
This way the operating cost will be curtailed to a great extent as it would facilitate web-based control of the light fixtures and the network informs officials.
This unprecedented initiative will be executed on roads adjoining Sectors 76 and 77, 75A and 76, 75 and 75A, 73 and 74, 71 and 73, 70 and 75, 70 and 70A, 68 and 69, and 68 and 70. All these sectors are a high traffic and pedestrian zones.
Unlike ordinary streetlights, this contemporary smart network will be linked to the GMDA’s Integrated Command and Control Centre and the operator using a cloud-based application will be able to monitor, control and dim them.
The timeline for project completion is 6 months and the estimated cost involved in the whole project would be approximately Rs 10.9 crore. The bids were opened by the authority this week itself.
“These smart lights will be equipped with a pre-programmed operating schedule, which would offer the control centre to manage the brightness”, quoted Shitij Kumar, GMDA, Executive Engineer.
Citing an example, he told that if traffic shrinks post-midnight, they can switch from 120 watts to 60 watts to cut down on power consumption.
The mentioned nine stretches in the newly developed sectors would be among the first areas in the city to have a smart streetlight network.
Presently, Rashtrapati Bhavan and the presidential estate in Delhi has a similar network.
